Foolproof Tips on How to Hang Banners

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Knowing how to hang your banner the right way makes all the difference, whether it’s on a fence outside or in a conference room. In this guide, we'll explain the proper ways to hang banners, so your audience notices them for the right reasons.

Knowing Your Hanging Options

Hanging options are one of the few factors customers consider when it comes to banner printing If you’re ordering a fabric, mesh, or vinyl banner, it’s best to familiarize yourself with these terms, as you’ll likely come across these hanging options:

  • Grommets are small nickel rings or eyelets embedded around the edges of the banner. The rings reinforce holes that allow ropes, cords, hooks to be threaded through for hanging. Grommets are also the most popular choice for securely hanging banners, especially if you’re looking to hang banners with a string or rope. They're widely used in trade shows, conferences, and outdoor events for their convenience and practicality.
  • Pole pockets are edges of a banner that are folded and heat-sealed over the backside. These form pockets for rigid poles to be inserted into the banners, which help carry the banner’s weight and allow for easy hanging. Pole pockets are commonly used for banners on poles, fences, and more.
  • Hemmings are edges of a banner that are folded over and heat welded. This adds durability to the banner by reinforcing the sides, helping it maintain its shape and preventing fraying or tearing.

Hanging Your Banner Indoors

Hanging indoor banners can be done using different methods, depending on the materials available and the preferred display location. Here are some of the best ways to hang an indoor banner:

  • Suction cups and hooks

If you want to hang your banner without damaging the wall, consider using suction cups and hooks. These are designed for small, lightweight banners that can be displayed on smooth, flat surfaces like windows, glass, or tiles. Ensure that the surface is clean and dust-free before hanging your banner. Once the suction cups are secure, place your grommets over the hook attachment and hang your banner. Remember to smooth it out to keep it wrinkle-free and attractive.

  • 3M Command™ hook strips

Another way to prevent your walls from getting damaged when hanging your banner is to use 3M Command™ hook strips. These adhesive strips come with hooks and don’t leave any residue even when removed.

To use these, start by cleaning the surface of the wall. Then, separate the strips, peel off one side of the liner, and press the strips firmly onto the wall for 30 seconds. Wait an hour before hanging your banner so the adhesive can set. If you need to remove the hook strips, gently pull them down, stretch them against the wall for about 15 inches (38 cm), and then release them.

  • Pushpins and nail hooks

If you prefer a sturdier alternative to suction cups and 3M Command™ strips and don’t mind leaving marks on your wall, use pushpins and nail hooks to hang your banner. You can do this by marking the areas where you’ll place your grommets. Then, ensure the banner placements are correctly aligned before hammering your nail hooks and securely hanging your banner.

How to Hang Banners Outside

If you’re hanging your banners outdoors, it’s important to choose stable materials that can withstand heat, wind, or rain so that your banner stays intact, regardless of the weather. Below are some of the most popular materials for hanging banners outdoors:

  • Nylon ropes

Nylon ropes are the easiest choice for hanging banners outdoors. They're versatile enough to slide through grommets and pole pockets, and you can easily tie the ends of the rope to a fence, pole, or any fixed object to secure the banner.

  • Zip ties

Zip ties are a great option if you’re looking for an affordable yet sturdy way to hang a banner. They don’t easily tear or break apart, so you can effortlessly keep your banner securely fastened to poles or chain-link fences.

To hang a banner outdoors using a zip or cable tie, thread one end through a reinforced corner of the banner and then an anchor point. Pull it tight, trim any excess, repeat for other corners, and ensure the banner is taut.

  • Bungee cords

If you need to hang long banners outside, consider using bungee cords to fully display them. Bungee cords have the flexibility to adapt to windy conditions while providing the necessary tension to keep your banner looking smooth and wrinkle-free. They also come with hooks or balls that you can attach to anchor points like poles, fences, and other fixed structures.

  • Hanging clips

Hanging clips or carabiners are another option for hanging banners, especially if you’re displaying them on chain-link fences. They can be inserted through grommets so that you can attach your banners on stable fixtures with ease. This method not only gets the job done effectively but also ensures your banners stay put, without any risk of sliding or falling off.

How to Hang Banners Without Grommets or Pole Pockets

If your banners don’t come with grommets or pole pockets, you can still hang them using these materials:

  • Tape

Stick the tape on all four corners or at the back of your banner to attach it to walls or other flat surfaces. When placing the tape on the front of the banner, we recommend using clear tape so as not to obstruct the design. You can also use double-sided tape and put it on the back of the banner but take note that using double-sided tape might damage your walls.

  • Velcro strips

Velcro strips are perfect for hanging lightweight banners without grommets or pole pockets. They won’t damage the wall and can be wrapped around a pole. To use, stick one strip to the back of the banner and another to the wall or pole. This method is very handy if you need to switch banners often.

  • Magnets

You can use strong magnets if you're displaying your banners on a metal surface. These will keep your banner in place, and you won’t have to worry about your banner shifting or falling.

How Do You Hang a Banner With a String?

Hanging a banner with a string is simple. You can use grommets, thread the string through them, and tie the ends of the string to anchor points like poles, nails, or hooks. Ensure the string is nice and tight so your banner hangs evenly for maximum visibility.

Knowing how to hang banners indoors and outdoors – and without causing any damage to the wall – not only keeps your promo looking great but also grabs your audience's attention. By following the methods in this guide, your banners will get your message across and make a great impression on anyone who sees them.
