How to Mount Metal Signs on Walls, Posts, or Fences

Metal signs are excellent for business signage, building or room markers, and wayfinding signs because of their durability and weather resistance. They are often made from composite aluminum and solid aluminum.

These signs are often attached to building walls, fences, posts, and outdoor areas where they are exposed to wind, rain, or extreme temperatures. Proper installation and correct mounting hardware are essential to ensure they stay secure and can withstand outdoor conditions.

Things You’ll Need to Install a Metal Sign

The exact tools and hardware required to install a metal sign depend on the mounting surface, preferred installation method, and whether the sign comes with pre-drilled holes.

Here’s a list of common materials used to install metal signs:

  • Screws or bolts
  • Washers and nuts
  • Zip ties or metal brackets
  • Drill or screwdriver
  • Measuring tape and level
  • Velcro (industrial-strength)
  • 3M Command Strips

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

The best location depends on factors such as the sign’s purpose (e.g., property identification, wayfinding, business visibility, etc.), lighting conditions, and distance from walkways or roadways. Most signs need to be installed at eye level, about 5-6 feet above the floor, to ensure maximum visibility.

Step 2: Clean the Surfaces

Thoroughly clean the metal sign and the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grime, dust, and debris. Allow them to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Align the Sign Before Mounting

Hold the sign against the mounting surface to check the alignment. Use a level to make sure it is straight. Next, mark the locations where the screws, bolts, or ties will be installed.

Step 4: Attach the Sign to the Mounting Surface

The right installation method depends on the mounting surfaces, e.g., concrete walls, wooden posts, metal gates, and steel fences.

For concrete mounting surfaces:

  • Drill holes in the marked locations to install signs with pre-drilled holes.
  • Attach the signs using masonry screws or wall anchors.
  • Consider using washers with screws. These small, thin rings (typically metal, rubber, or plastic) prevent surface damage and ensure the sign's longevity by distributing pressure and managing high wind loads.
  • Using zip ties is another option for installing metal signs with pre-drilled holes.

For wooden posts:

  • Use wood screws to attach metal signs with pre-drilled holes.

For metal posts:

  • Use washers and nuts or mounting brackets to install metal signs with pre-drilled holes.

For flat surfaces where drilling is not allowed or recommended:

  • Use industrial-strength Velcro or 3M Command Strips to install metal signs with no pre-drilled holes.
  • Cut the adhesive strips to size and round their corners with scissors to prevent them from peeling at the edges over time.
  • Peel the paper backing or protective liner off and press the adhesive strips against the wall for 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
  • Protect your sign from vibrations and high winds for the first 24 hours after installation to give the adhesive enough time to cure undisturbed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metal Signs

A.

Both materials are rust-proof and weather-resistant, making them ideal for indoor and outdoor use. However, solid aluminum is a better option if you want a more “industrial” look, or you need extra durability for your sign. Meanwhile, composite aluminum is a lighter, more affordable option

A.

Yes. You can add pre-drilled holes to all four corners, top corners only, or one hole each at the top and bottom, depending on your needs.

A.

Yes. For temporary installation, you can use zip ties, removable brackets, or portable frames, which allow the sign to be easily removed or relocated.

Although metal signs are notably durable and weather-resistant, proper installation remains important to extend their life and prevent damage. The key is to use the right mounting hardware and accessories based on the mounting surface, location (indoor vs. outdoor), and the size of the sign
