How to Apply Wall Decals Without Damaging Paint

Wall decals are perfect for decorating a space without committing to permanent, expensive changes like murals or custom paint jobs. Decals printed on adhesive vinyl are particularly ideal if you’re looking for a more paint-friendly way to spruce up your wall.

Things to Keep in Mind for a Paint-Safe Installation

  • The paint must be properly cured before installation (painted at least 3-4 weeks prior).
  • The paint should not be chalky or peeling.
  • Wall decals are suitable for semi-gloss, satin, and eggshell wall paints.
  • Removable vinyl decals are the safest option for a damage-free installation.
  • Avoid wall decals with permanent or very strong adhesive.

Tools and Supplies You’ll Need to Install a Wall Decal

  • Painter’s tape (masking tape is a good substitute)
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Squeegee or credit card
  • Mild wall cleaner
  • A level or measuring tape to ensure proper alignment

Step 1: Clean the Wall Surface

Use a mild cleaner or a damp cloth to remove dust, grease, or debris on the wall. Next, allow the surface to dry completely before installing the decal.

Step 2: Position the Decal

Position the decal (with its backing paper intact) on the wall using painter’s tape to hold it in place. Step back and check the alignment from different angles.

Step 3: Peel the Backing Paper

Peel away the backing paper from the decal. Large wall decals typically come with transfer tape to prevent curling or folding during installation.

Step 4: Apply the Decal to the Wall

Press the decal onto the wall, pushing it from the center and toward the edges using a squeegee or a credit card. The goal is to push out any air bubbles and smooth out wrinkles.

Step 5: Remove the Transfer Tape

If your wall decal comes with transfer tape, remove it after the decal is firmly attached to the wall. Peel the tape away slowly at a sharp angle, keeping it close to the wall. Should the decal lift with the tape, press it back down before continuing.

Step 6: Inspect the Decal

After removing the transfer tape, step back and check for any trapped air bubbles; you can smooth them out with a squeegee or a credit card.
