Brochures are supporting promotional materials. Aside from providing additional information on products and/or services you offer, they are useful for backing up your advertising and marketing claims. Mailing or giving out brochures to your customers when they visit your store adds a more personal approach to your clients. This would make your clients feel valued and appreciated, which could convert them into loyal customers in the long run.

However, would handing your customers just any brochure do the trick? The answer is a resounding "no!" In fact, most brochures don’t even get opened because of poor design. Factors that affect the overall brochure design of your brochure include packaging, images, relevance and quality of content, layout, color scheme and folds, among others. Unaligned design elements, as well as the use of low-resolution images, repetitive content, and unreadable font text are just some of the examples that contribute to poor design.

In order to avoid making mistakes in the designing and printing of your brochures, planning and outlining your layout is the way to go. This can be done with the use of brochure templates, which are pre-made brochures that you follow or fill out to create your own. These templates show you the digital representation of the brochure and its trim line in which the material is cut after printing. Knowing these locations on the template will help you place relevant information and high-resolution images about your company in their right places.

The biggest advantage of using brochure templates is that it saves you time and effort as compared to starting out with a blank piece of paper. It gives you a general idea of how your brochures will look like once they have been printed. Its major disadvantage, however, is that your brochures may end up looking like someone else’s, in terms of your layout and placement of design elements. In order to avoid this, you can use brochure templates in two ways.

First, change the color of the lines and figures within the trim line of your downloadable brochure templates. Try to reshape figures in the work area as well. This will require your creativity but only to a certain level. It won’t require much effort on your part since the figures and lines are laid out on the templates. Just make sure to check the print preview from time to time.

The second option to take is to download outline templates and start from scratch. Designing over a template puts your brochures at risk of having a duplicate layout with another company who may have downloaded the same template. Therefore, to ensure the uniqueness of your brochure design, get ideas from your pre-designed templates and start your work on an outline template. This template is perfect for those who are creative by nature and have experience using a graphics editing program. Outline templates don’t have images, color or content, but only have borders and content spaces. These suggest where you can put your images or where you should write inside your brochure. Although this method is a bit more difficult and time-consuming than creating an artwork using a pre-designed brochure template, it nonetheless gives you complete control on how you want your design to look.

Taking into account the benefits they bring, using brochure templates gives you a general idea of how to create your design, as well as minimize techincal errors on your artwork. If you are stumped with your brochure artwork, take 10-minute breaks to take your mind off what you're designing and return with a fresh perspective. Also, the effort you put in designing your brochures using templates should also equal the effort you put in delivering your message on the brochures. Make sure your content is written in such a way that it informs the public about your business and encourages them to purchase your product or service.
