Most of us may be done watching Saturday morning Nickelodeon, but ask anyone and they had at least one favorite cartoon character growing up. Retail brands are taking notice and joining the nostalgic trend, making references to Disney, anime, even video game characters in their products and collections. It\u2019s become a prevalent fad year after year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tomatoda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TomaToda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is no different. Owner Emily Jang\u2019s love for these \u201ckawaii\u201d (Japanese word for \u201ccute&#8221;) characters gives her inspiration in crafting her handmade accessories. Her online shop is on the rise with this unique fashion trend. But what does make Emily different is her ability to \u201ckeep it real\u201d as a young business owner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>It Starts With a Support System<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though her affinity for crafting came at an early age, making miniature clothes and jewelry for Happy Meal toys and action figures, there were still a couple of detours before she started TomaToda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29132\" src=\"https:\/\/uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Emily Jang, Founder of TomaToda<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily went through different jobs in food service throughout college, learned customer service through waitressing and managing her mother\u2019s Etsy shop, and even lived in Korea for a few years. During all this, she kept sculpting and making accessories, while everyone she knew was trying to convince her to open an online shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has always been a dream to sell my handmade goods, and everyone\u2019s been really encouraging and supportive. Back in college, my best friend would joke that she\u2019s been waiting for emily.com to open.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even her husband, who created the brand\u2019s endearingly deadpan tomato mascot, persuaded her to start the business while depending solely on his income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After working as a freelance English tutor for 3 years, she decided to give her dream a shot and returned to the United States.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rolling With the Punches<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick scroll through TomaToda\u2019s feed shows no room for subtle, dainty jewelry. Statement pieces that range from miniature ice cream pendants, galactical hair ties and Super Mario candy key chains evoke a futuristic yet \u201890s aesthetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29133\" src=\"https:\/\/uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/6-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"785\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/6-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/6-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/6-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/6.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though her products are colorful and fun, Emily says that isn\u2019t always the case when it comes to making them. Her biggest challenge was the learning curve with tricky mediums like resin. \u201cI would literally break down and cry because it was so frustrating. I did keep practicing and eventually overcame it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though practice does make perfect, she would still come across design complications in the middle of rendering a piece. I like money, but I\u2019d rather be happy and have free will.\u201d Which is also why TomaToda doesn\u2019t take custom orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her business also allows her to stay true to herself. Compared to the carefully curated messages many businesses share online, she doesn\u2019t mind talking about the good <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the bad. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI let people know when I\u2019m having a mood. I make jokes, share meaningless content for laughs. My millennial audience understands this, and they enjoy it! But most of all, be pragmatic. \u201cMake sure not only you, but other people believe you have the skills to run your own business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite her firm grip on reality, Emily has big dreams for TomaToda. It\u2019s helped me network a lot. They get a lot of comments about being cute. So even if people don\u2019t buy anything, they will pick up a card.
