Among the many companies that switched to a\u00a0sans serif logotype around this era were\u00a0Nestl\u00e9, Mattel, National\/Panasonic, American Airlines, Toyota \u2014 and many, many others.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Pepsi was named after an enzyme \u2013 pepsin. It may have started out free, but\u00a0just using basic critical thinking, it\u2019s safe to say they pay designers for every iteration, whether on a retainer or on some other basis.<\/p><p><b>Fun Facts!<\/b><\/p><ul><li>Created by Coca-Cola bookkeeper (later director)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Mason_Robinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Mason Robinson, in 1885.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The logotype is based on the\u00a0Spencerian script, as Frank Mason Robinson executed it with the help of a local Atlanta engraver named Frank Ridge.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The Spencerian script\u00a0was developed in the mid-19th century and was the dominant form of formal handwriting in the United States until it was replaced by the Palmer method in the early 20th century.\u00a0Another notable brand that uses the same logotype today is the<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a0\/Ford_Motor_Company_Logo.svg\/2000px-Ford_Motor_Company_Logo.svg.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Ford Motor Company.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Frank Mason Robinson never got a bonus or a raise for his work. He did lay the foundations for Coca-Cola\u2019s enduring image, not just with his handwriting, but by planning many of its early marketing campaigns as well.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>It\u2019s not factual to say that the Coca-Cola logo has not changed for a few\u00a0reasons:<ul><li><em>Coca-Cola used different fonts before 1900.<\/em><\/li><li><em>There have very clearly been changes to the logo design with each new product variant and with each era.<\/em><\/li><li><em>Coca-Cola entirely changed its logotype to serifed typeface that simply said \u201cCoke\u201d during the three months of the ill-fated\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/stories\/coke-lore-new-coke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Coke experiment.<\/a><\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>However, it is entirely accurate to say that the basis of the Coca-Cola logo, its\u00a0<em>logotype<\/em>\u00a0or<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wordmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wordmark<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>has not significantly changed\u00a0over the past 110 years,<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-div-23609-136 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bde-heading-23609-137 bde-heading\">\nWhy does Pepsi change logos so often, while Coca-Cola barely does?\n<\/h2><div class=\"bde-rich-text-23609-140 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>In the simplest terms, Coca-Cola has consistently built it\u2019s identity and value around tradition, while Pepsi has done the opposite, favoring an approach that attempts to keep the brand forever contemporary.<\/p>\n<\/div><a class=\"bde-container-link-23609-138 bde-container-link breakdance-link\" href=\"#\" target=\"_self\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"bde-image2-23609-139 bde-image2\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Pepsi-vs-Coca-Cola-e1453366403851.jpg\" alt=\"pepsi-logos\" loading=\"lazy\">\n\n<\/a><div class=\"bde-div-23609-144 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"bde-div-23609-145 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"bde-rich-text-23609-146 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>And it has little\u00a0to do with product quality either \u2014 it\u2019s just what their regular consumers expect.<\/p><p>Pepsi for instance, did not even begin to approach Coca-Cola in terms of sales nor brand loyalty up until it actively attempted to rebrand itself as the hip, modern counterpoint to Coke in the early 1960\u2019s \u2014 beginning with its transition from a Spencerian script font similar to Coca-Cola\u2019s to a sans serif font.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-div-23609-147 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"bde-image2-23609-148 bde-image2\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Pepsi.logos_.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-rich-text-23609-150 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>After two decades of continually appealing to younger, less traditional consumers,\u00a0Pepsi had significantly eroded Coca-Cola\u2019s market lead, causing them to do the unthinkable \u2014 change their product entirely.<\/p><p>When Coca-Cola introduced\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3822869\/new-coke-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>New Coke\u00a0<\/em><\/a>in 1985<em>,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0they were pretty sure it would be a success, as test groups had overwhelmingly preferred the new, Pepsi-like formula to the traditional one. When the classic formula was reintroduced a few months later, Coca-Cola actually had a jump in sales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-div-23609-153 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"bde-heading-23609-155 bde-heading\">\nWhat we can learn\n<\/h2><div class=\"bde-rich-text-23609-154 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<hr \/><ul><li>Logos and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/label-printing.html\">labels<\/a>\u00a0should be a reflection of what you want your brand to be. They are not your brand.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>A brand whose philosophy is to be forever contemporary will always be in flux.
