Forgetful Gentleman Logo“Handwritten correspondence is by nature an intentional and deliberate act and that makes it more thoughtful and meaningful” says Nate Tan who joined forces with his business school buddy Brett Nicol in 2008 to create a premium stationery brand called Forgetful Gentleman.

Forgetful Gentleman seeks to revive the fine art of sending handwritten notes, a more sincere and meaningful alternative to e-mails and text messages.

The company’s story began when Brett found several of his unfinished notes and cards while packing to move to Charlotte (he was starting an internship with Bank of America). Some of the cards were half-written, others didn’t have their complete addresses, and a handful were ready to go but lacking stamps. Sharing the situation with Nate, they made a list of all the reasons that keep men from writing and sending handwritten notes and came up with ways to get past them. This led to the opening of Forgetful Gentleman.

The original forgetful gentlemen, as Nate and Brett call themselves, define their demographic as men as who are just like them:

FORGETFUL GENTLEMAN [fer-get-fuhl jen-tl-muhn] n. a classy, sophisticated, modern man whose busy lifestyle often interferes with his well-intentioned plans.

To make sure that these well-meaning men are able to keep up their correspondences with ease, the stationers offer a line of note cards called Elephant Cards. This is a set of 12 simple, sophisticated, and masculine note cards, 4 stamped envelopes, a guide to articulate writing, and an online “personal assistant” with text and e-mail event reminders. There are two kinds available in the line: the Classic Linen or the Premium Letterpress (this comes in an elegant wooden box) versions. The premium stationery is printed on 100% cotton paper made in the same paper mill that provided Napoleon Bonaparte’s wedding invitations and Picasso’s writing paper.Nate of Forgetful Gentleman

It is the company’s hope that more forgetful gentlemen are able to drop the ‘forgetful’ by using their high quality products. Nate says “We are excited by an initial sale but infinitely more excited when customers come back to us for refill sets because that means that our product is helping them write and they are doing it!”

To remind forgetful gentlemen that Brett and Nate are here to help solve their problem of unsent notes, Forgetful Gentleman has ordered brochures, point-of-sales displays, business cards, stickers, and labels from UPrinting.com The company’s owners are impressed by the high level of print quality that UPrinting produces. They say “For a premium-positioned company like ours, every touch point with customers and vendors must reinforce our brand. UPrinting’s customer service matches their print quality. The pre-press department is extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in setting up files correctly and answering any questions.”

UPrinting has also been instrumental in marketing Forgetful Gentleman by providing them with professional-quality presentation materials. UPrinting’s products have always been consistent with Forgetful Gentleman’s branding, a fact that the company’s founders are grateful for. “Over the last few months we have grown tremendously and our products are now available both online and in retail stores across 25 states and counting! Thanks UPrinting! “ Mr. Tan raves.
