It wouldn’t surprise anyone to hear a designer confess that his first inspiration came from a children’s book. Growing up, we must have spent hours listening to classic stories by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen or the Brothers Grimm. These stories were integral in developing our imagination as kids – and without good imagination, graphic designers wouldn’t be as celebrated as they are today.

Now that we’re older, it’s our turn to help inspire the new generation. Children today seem to lack enthusiasm when it comes to reading; most are content with playing games, watching television, or going online. Books are wonderful little things that most have taken for granted. It’s our job to remind everyone the magic that reading brings.

April 2 is not only known for being the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen; it’s also International Children’s Book Day. Here are some of our favorite children’s book characters as envisioned by amazing graphic design artists from different parts of the world. Go and see how many of these characters you remember. Hover over the images to see what books these images are from (as well as the name of the artist who made them).

There are other ways to encourage kids to partake in reading. Parents set a reading time with their children where they read with them at least once a week. Having custom stickers of their favorite children’s book characters in their room might also help. If you’re a graphic designer, try and pay homage to your favorite book this April 2nd by creating your own visual interpretation.
