Invitations containing the photo of the celebrant are called photo invitations. Since these are more personal in approach, there's a greater chance that the recipients of the photo invites will join your festivities. Compared to other invitations, the photos on the invitations should encourage people to keep these as souvenirs.
Here are several occasions where you can apply photo invitations:

Birthdays – Whether it’s your child’s first or nth birthday party, you can use his or her picture as design. Display cute photos of your child so your guests could see how much he or she has grown.

Weddings – Show your guests-to-be how much an attractive couple you and your loved one are by using your best prenuptial photograph in your wedding invitations.

Anniversaries – Throwing a party for your 50th anniversary? Have your most current photograph taken and use it on your invitation cards. Display it side by side with photos that show both of you as a young couple. Doing this shows your guests that you’re 50 years together and still going strong.

Graduations – To cap off your time at school, send them an invite to your graduation party. Your photograph should add a dramatic effect that sets the mood of your event.

Tributes – Holding a party to commemorate the life and works of a person dear to you? Make photo invitations to give your guests-to-be an idea of who he is and what he is and was like.

Celebratory Events – Just got promoted? Accomplished something of great importance? Or you just feel like throwing a party for someone? Be proud and put your/their photo on your invitations.
These are just the common occasions you can use photo invitations. Aside from adding a personal feel on your invitations, you also show how your guests-to-be just how proud you are.
